Thats what decides if we get commissions or not.
It decided if you have a good fame, or rather bad.
It can help you in getting a job, or maybe even make a job giver look negative at you.
Popularity.

Especially here on deviantArt. Well for being honest, dA is no good place for "real" artists and designers.
They may get some honey around their mouth, but there is nearly never useful critique.
But places like deviantArt can (if you do it right) help you to become more popular... well but usually only around the web.
Another fact is, it doesnt matter how many people watch, fav or comment your art. Most time you have the same problem as fresh or studying artist : money.
And if you are going to ask for it in commissions, your big fans wont take one. Why? Because they are mostly kids. Not earning money.
But then, there are also artist, with nearly the same skill, same amount of watchers... but who get their commission slots filled within minutes when the artist shouts "they are open!".
Why? I think I kinda found one reason for it... they are not easy to reach. And I dont mean, "not easy to reach skill" but like an, they are nearly never contactable.
I noticed that now on many many of my artist buddys on dA. Kind of same skills (well different styles, but you know what I mean) but wont get as many commissions when they comment, talk, chat and keep contact with their fans and watchers, as one artist gets who is rarely on, rarely posts a comment and lets the web work for itself.
It´s like a "wow, the artist is online now, I have to catch the chance to get something from him/her as long as I can!"
For the other artists who keep contact, they know the artist is available. They can ask him/her any time, so why rush?

For getting more popularity, many people search for something, that the art-market likes. And whats on the top? Furry Arts.
Not meaning it bad, but fact is, pages likes FurAffinity are filled with those people. And so do artist use this chance to get attention, commissions and popularity after a while.
Why not? It´s a simple and good idea to go after a working market, pick the chance. Everyone can do what they want to.
Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against it, but some artist are sadly wasting their skills within these artworks. I have seen so many artists having really great skills, but using it for Yiff Arts, or whatever they are called, nearly never doing something else. They sure can feel free, but isnt it sometimes going to far, just to get popularity?
I mean I thought of these kinds of commissions too, but didnt feel comfortable with it. I know some people, who also dont  feel comfortable with it, but keep doing it because they get a good amount of money from it.
I couldnt do it, also I would fear to loose some kind of "good-reputation" through those arts, get shoved under a cover with all the other furry artists.
Hearing people call me a "furry" because I illustrate animals, make me choke. Is it worth the popularity to maybe get stamped one day as a furry? A call you wont get shot off?
My tip for every kind of artist, even its maybe just a hobby and not planned to become a job one day... be loyal to yourself.
If you dont feel comfortable with something, dont do it. There are so many other things to do, the area of art is giant.
Dont do something you dont want to, it´s not worth the popularity. When you are good enough, feel good with yourself and good with the people around you, who look up to you and be proud as heck because YOU write to them, popularity comes by itself.

*sigh* had to get lost off this.
I think some people out there needed this^^
Enjoy your art, and have a nice day!

In the short time I've been on this site I've also noticed the thing with artists being more popular becuase they don't keep in contact with fans and such. I, for one, get so happy when someone makes my inbox pop up and I'm always quick to answer, but maybe that's just me since I don't get a lot. I don't aim to become popular fast, I'd rather see other peoples art to teach myself and get better. But I'm only 13. Time is in my favor, haha. You for one are an amazing artist and you deserve every comment, fave, veiw, and badge you get.
